Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The USD Softball team (15-16, 1-1) kicked off the WCC season by splitting a doubleheader with the Pacific Tigers (18-20, 1-1) Saturday afternoon at the USD Softball Complex. The Toreros won an 11-inning marathon 4-3 in game one, but then fell 8-2 in the second game

SAN DIEGO 4, PACIFIC 3 (11 innings)

In game one, the Toreros scored two runs in the bottom of the second after notching four infield singles.

USD added one more in the third on a Lindsay Clare sacrifice fly to center, scoring pinch runner Savannah Shields.

Megan Sabbatini was electric to start the game, retiring the first ten batters in order. The Tigers broke through in the top of the fifth. Rachel Sellers drew a leadoff walk and then Samantha Owen laced a double to the left center gap to bring Sellers home, brining the score to 3-1 USD.

The Tigers tied the game in the top of the sixth on a Sydney Lahners two-run homer to left.

The Toreros loaded the bases in the sixth and eighth inning, but the Tigers were able to escape the jam both times. The Toreros left 13 runners on base in the first game, one shy of tying a school record.

USD finally caught their break in the bottom of the 11th inning. Lauren Kane, who reached on a fielder’s choice, advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kailey Hill then hit a sharply hit single to the opposite field and Kane beat the throw to win the game.

Sabbatini (6-8) pitched all 11 innings, striking out a season-high 11 batters while allowing just three runs on eight hits. Sabbatini stranded ten Tigers.

PACIFIC 8, SAN DIEGO 2

After scoring three runs across 11 innings in game one, the Tigers scored three in the first inning of game two. With runners on first and second, Sydney Lahners blasted her second home run of the day.

The Tigers added four more in the top of the third, with three coming on another three-run home run. This one came from Ralene Estrada.

The Toreros finally cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh, taking advantage of a pair of Tiger errors to score two unearned runs.

Torero starter Delaney Heller (4-4) was charged with six runs (four earned) in 2.1 innings. Lauren Berriatua pitched the final 4.2 innings, giving up two runs on four hits.

The Tigers’ starter Hailey Reed threw a complete game, giving up six hits and two unearned runs.

The Toreros wrap up their three game series with Pacific Sunday at noon.
