SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The USD softball squad broke even with CSU Bakersfield in Pacific Coast Softball Conference action Sunday afternoon from the USD Softball Complex. The Toreros (19-21, 4-8) piled up 12 hits in game one to post a 5-0 win before being edged 3-2 in the series finale. The teams split the four-game series two games apiece.

Both teams had scoring opportunities in the first two innings, but it was USD who struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. Morgan Kurtz led off the inning by beating out an infield single and was later knocked in by Chloe Kaneko's double down the left field line. The next batter, Lauren Tomey, ripped an RBI single to center field that scored Kaneko and put USD up 2-0.

CSUB (13-25, 8-8) threatened in the top of the fifth with runners on second and third with two outs. However, USD starter Cassidy Coleman shut the door with a punch out looking to end the threat and preserve the 2-0 lead.

In the next half inning, the Toreros added to their lead with an RBI single up the middle by Kaneko that brought home Dana Prelsnik and a sacrifice fly from Caitlin Rooney that gave USD a 4-0 advantage.

USD added their final insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Kylie McNutt scorched a two-out base hit off the pitcher's glove with runners on first and second. The ball was then mishandled by the CSUB second baseman on the deflection, causing the ball to roll into shallow left field and allow Kurtz to score in the process.

Coleman allowed a base hit in the seventh but closed out the game to earn the shutout. Coleman (10-10) picked up the complete game victory, scattering four hits while striking out five.

Tomey (3-for-3, RBI) and Kurtz (3-for-3, 2R) led the way for the Toreros offensively in game one, while Kaneko (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 2R) turned in a solid day at the plate as well.

The Toreros took a 1-0 lead in game two after Kaneko ripped a single up the middle in the bottom of the third that scored Kylie Ordos.

The Roadrunners come right back in the top of the fourth and tied the score at 1-1 with an RBI single up the middle.

Both teams traded zeros until the top of the seventh when CSUB finally pulled ahead. The Roadrunners picked up runs on a bloop single to right field and a double to center to go up 3-1.

USD didn't go down easily, however. The Toreros rallied for a run in the bottom of the seventh but eventually Kaneko struck out with runners on second and third to end the ball game and give CSUB the 3-2 victory.

Jenny Lahitte (8-11) threw a solid game but took the loss after going 7.0 innings where she allowed three runs on five hits while striking out six and walking one.

The Toreros return to action on Tuesday, Apr. 16 when they host San Diego State in nonconference action at 6 pm from the USD Softball Complex.
