Gina McFarland finished the day with a combined 5-for-7 (.714) as San Diego splits with Sacramento State

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team recorded a conference win and a loss on Sunday afternoon against the Sacramento State University Hornets at the USD Softball Complex. In game won, San Diego defeated the Hornets 9-8, but was not able to come back from a 3-0 deficit in game two.
In game one, the Toreros jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the second inning. Sacramento state responded in the bottom half of the inning taking a 4-3 lead. USD followed scoring two runs in the third inning recapturing the lead 5-4.
San Diego's big inning came in the seventh inning when they scored four runs on three hits. Behind 6-5, Sara Mason led off with a single up the middle. Gina McFarland laid down a bunt back at the pitcher beating out the throw and advancing Mason to second base. Marissa Merchain put a sacrifice bunt in play which was fielded by the pitcher who threw the ball past high allowing Merchain to advance to second base on the error and moved McFarland to third base while Mason scored tying the game 6-6. Rebekah Bradford took base on balls brining up Ashlee Nunes who belted a three-run triple to center field scoring McFarland, Merchain, and Bradford for a 9-6 lead.
Sacramento State made a comeback attempt as they scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. However San Diego's defense held the Hornets winning 9-8.
In game two, the Toreros were shut out only recording three hits. Sacramento State scored one run in the first inning and two runs in the second inning. Sacramento State freshman pitcher Cassie Cervantes pitched a complete game allowing only three hits and striking out 12 Toreros.
Offensively for San Diego, Gina McFarland hit a combined 5-for-7 (.714) on the day with one double, one RBI, and three runs scored. Sara Mason hit 2-for-4 (.500) with three runs scored. Marissa Merchain hit 2-for-6 (.333) with two runs scored.
Defensively for the Toreros, Gina McFarland picks up a win allowing two runs on five hits, striking out two batters in five innings of work. She moves to 5-2 overall with a 2.73 ERA. Christina Haake posts a loss allowing five runs on eight hits, stiking out three batters in seven innings of work. Haake was credited with the save in game one and moves to 6-7 with a 4.31 ERA.
The Toreros will travel to Portland, Ore. this upcoming weekend as they take on conference opponent Portland State University (26-13, 8-1 PCSC). The first game is scheduled for Saturday, April 29 at noon from Erv Lind Stadium.
