Toreros shutout Santa Clara 4-0 in game one

SARATOGA, Calif. - Jennifer Ellenbeck led the University of San Diego (17-31, 7-7 PCSC) softball team to a 4-0 game one shutout win over the Santa Clara Broncos (6-43, 1-13). The Toreros dropped a 3-1 decision in game two.
Ellenbeck went the distance in game one striking out six batters in seven innings from the circle. She also helped her cause at the plate as she recorded an RBI double. Lindsay Fleet hit a homerun in the win as the Toreros recorded 10 hits as a team in the 4-0 victory.
San Diego dropped a 3-1 decision in game two as Kaitlin Healy pitched 5.1 innings, striking out two batters. San Diego lost the contest despite out-hitting the Broncos, 7-5, and playing errorless defense.
In game one, the Toreros jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after a homerun by Lindsay Fleet. Kristen Gensler grounded out to second base. Jennifer Ellenbeck singled to third base. Fleet homered to centerfield for USD scoring Ellenbeck to take a 2-0 lead. Celeste Soto grounded out to third base for the second out. Taylor Hensley took base-on-balls and then moved all the way to third base on a Taryn Keenan single down the right field line. Cathy Wineinger would strike out to end the inning.
With two outs in the second inning, Gensler singled to keep the inning alive. Ellenbeck followed with her RBI double as Gensler scored all the way from first base to take a 3-0 lead. The Toreros would score once more in the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead as the Torero defense held strong through the remaining innings to shutout the Broncos.
In game two, San Diego again took the lead scoring one run in the second inning. Hensley led off the second inning with a single down the right field line. Taryn Keenan singled to centerfield with Hensley moving to second base. Kaslin Tucker grounded out to the pitcher with Hensley and Keenan each moving up a base. Alyssa Schott lifted a deep sacrifice-fly to left field that allowed Hensley to score from third for a 1-0 lead. Wineinger ended the inning with a fly out to right field.
Santa Clara responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs take a 2-1 lead. The Broncos would score again in the fourth inning and hold on for the 3-1 win.
With her game one victory, pitcher Jennifer Ellenbeck improves to 9-14 on the season. She now has 128 K's on the season. Kaitlin Healy falls to 6-7 on the season. Fleet's homerun gives her two on the season, and she has a team-leading 24 RBI. Ellenbeck now has four doubles on the season.
The Toreros are still in the PCSC hunt owning a 7-7 mark. Sacramento State and Saint Mary's are tied for third place at 7-6 in conference; LMU is 9-5 holding down second place; Portland State is in first place at 10-4.
