SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Toreros jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in the first inning of game one against the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners on Sunday afternoon and picked up the win 6-5 thanks to a walk-off homerun in the eighth inning by Taylor Hensley. USD fell in game two 9-3 finishing out the PCSC series 2-2 with the Roadrunners.
San Diego improves to 15-24 overall on the season and 4-6 in the PCSC. Bakersfield moves to 18-28 on the season and 6-6 in the PCSC.
After Bakersfield took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Toreros went on a hit parade to post five runs on two hits. Kristen Gensler singled to first base to start off the inning followed by Danielle Duhart laying down a solid sacrifice bunt which she wasn't able to beat out, but advanced Gensler to second base. Taylor Hensley doubled down the left field line moving Gensler over to third base. Celeste Soto walked loading the bases followed by an RBI-walk for Jennifer Ellenbeck as Gensler scored from third base. Carey Casciola hit a sac-fly scoring Taylor Hensley and advancing Soto ahead to third base. Megan Walsh reached on a Roadrunner error and advanced to second base moving Ellenbeck up to third base and scoring Soto giving USD a 3-1 lead. Mickell Escobar reached on another Bakersfield error allowing both Ellenbeck and Walsh to score as San Diego took a 5-1 lead.
The Roadrunners would slowly chip away at USD's four run lead scoring one run in the third inning, one run in the sixth inning and then two runs in the seventh inning to tie the game at 5-5. Taylor Hensley led off the eighth inning with a walk-off homerun to end the game 6-5.
San Diego fell in game two 9-3. Bakersfield struck first in the second inning taking a 1-0 lead which San Diego responded to with a run in the third inning tying it at 1-1. USD pushed across two runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead. The Roadrunners put up four runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 9-3 lead over the Toreros.
Kristen Gensler finished the day 4-for-8 recording one double, one triple, one RBI, and one run scored. Taylor Hensley finished the day 3-for-7 with one double, one homerun, one RBI, and two runs scored.
Jennifer Ellenbeck picked up the win moving to 11-11 striking out seven batters. Kaitlin Healy took the loss falling to 2-7 on the season.
San Diego returns home to face conference rival Loyola Marymount on Saturday, May 1 for a PCSC doubleheader scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. at the USD Softball Complex.
