SAN DIEGO – USD sophomore left fielder Taylor Spence (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) received outstanding news today when she was named to the 2017 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division I All-West Region Second Team. Spence led the West Coast Conference in hitting (.403) and became just the fourth Torero to finish with a batting average of .400 or above (minimum 100 at-bats). This marks the second straight year Spence has been recognized by the NFCA. Last season she became the program’s first freshman to be honored when she was selected to the Third Team.
“Taylor had a great season and she is deserving of this honor,” said head coach Melissa McElvain. “As our leadoff hitter all season, she really set the table for the rest of our line-up. Taylor does a great job reading the defense and executing her plan. I’m so proud of her and all the hard work she put in this season.”
Spence started all 46 games for the Toreros (24-26) who placed third in the West Coast Conference and advanced to the postseason for the first time in program history with an invitation to the NISC Postseason Championships. In addition to her final .403 batting average, Taylor totaled 60 hits, 31 runs, 15 walks, 12 stolen bases, a .467 on-base percentage and a .416 slugging percentage. Additionally, the All-WCC First Team selection led the team with 18 multiple-hit games.
The National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced that 667 student-athletes from 175 programs have received 2017 NFCA Division I All-Region accolades.
The awards honor softball student-athletes from the Association’s 10 regions with first, second and third team selections. NFCA member coaches from each respective region voted on the teams, and all the honorees now become eligible for selection to the 2017 NFCA Division I All-American squads.
The 2017 NFCA Division I All-America teams will be announced at approximately 5 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, May 31, via NFCA.org.
