What is your most memorable swimming/diving moment? Why?
One of my most memorable swimming moments is winning CIF DIV. II as a team my senior year of high school. Throughout high school I worked so hard to balance my schoolwork as well as my swimming career, but it was very difficult to handle a schedule full of honors and AP classes as well as the high intensity of swimming. I would often contemplate either lightening my load of schoolwork or else swimming less devoutly. But I kept with it all four years of high school, and my commitment to both swimming and school is evident with my CIF win. I was a major contributor to our achievement and I feel that I have made a lasting impact at my school. My CIF win shows how far I have advanced in swimming over high school, to barely qualifying for CIF to winning CIF as well as snatching two second-place finishes individually. And what makes me the proudest is that I was able to achieve all of this without lightening my course load.
Describe yourself as an athlete and as a student.
I am a hardworking athlete and student. I want to succeed both in my academics and in swimming. I chose to be an athlete for my enjoyment and my drive for success and my competitive nature pushes me to be my best in swimming and in academics.
What piece of coaching and/or personal advice has stuck with you over the years?
My club team coach's motto was "Work, works" and I have found over the years that if you put in the effort you can succeed in anything. My coach loved to come to practice everyday, even if it was early morning 5 o'clock practices or optional Sunday morning practices. We would ask him sometimes if he ever got annoyed with being at the swimming pool practically 24/7. What he would say to this is that "he lives to work, not that he works to vacation." He genuinely enjoyed every day he was at the pool, and it was obvious to see the effort he put into it. He didn't do it just because he had to, but because he wanted to. I think that this is a really valuable lesson to learn: to enjoy every task that you do even if it may be mundane and even if you may do it every day. This relates very well to swimming, because we swim back and forth over and over again, and have morning practices and evening practices day after day. But my coaches attitude influenced my entire team to appreciate coming to practice daily and to always be eager for the day. This philosophy is still with me today, as I try to make the most of every opportunity available to me and to enjoy all that I set out to accomplish.
