USD swim wins Beach Cup with four 1st place finishes

MALIBU, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's swim team capped off a strong weekend by winning the 2013 Beach Cup on Saturday afternoon from Pepperdine's Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool. The Toreros compiled a meet-best total of 711 points, which topped Loyola Marymount's 681, Fresno State's 596 and Pepperdine's 210. USD posted four wins on the second and final day of competition.

The morning session started with USD's A relay (Taylor, Finucane, Stone, Kimmel) posting a 2nd place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:36.70.

Keenan Lineback then placed 2nd in the 400-yard IM, finishing at 4:28.13. Eleanor Phillips wasn't far behind in 4th place with her swim of 4:38.58.

Kelly Stone notched USD's first victory of the day when she took the top spot in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing in 58.22. Taylor Noonan (58.45) and Jacquie Kimmel (59.12) finished in 3rd and 5th place, respectively.

Francesca Finucane then kept the momentum going in the afternoon session by posting another 1st place finish for the Toreros, this time in the 200-yard freestyle. Finucane swam a 1:52.51 to lead the way.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, Sammi Cohn logged the Toreros' top finish by coming in 5th with a time of 1:07.75. Paige Sellers took 9th place with her time of 1:10.35.

Lexie Franz and Sarah Reierson finished in 3rd and 4th place, respectively, in the 100-yard backstroke. Franz posted a time of 59.48, while Reierson finished just behind at 59.59.



USD's A relay (Reierson, Cohn, Stone, Finucane) came in 2nd in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:57.63.

The Toreros then picked up another top finish, this time in the 1650-yard freestyle when Keenan Lineback clocked a 17:21.11. Morgan Scarth also put together a top-5 swim with her 5th place finish and time of 18:15.72.

The 200 backstroke featured a 4th place finish from Reierson, who clocked a 2:07.55. Franz came in two spots behind in 6th place with her time of 2:08.36.

Three Toreros finished in consecutive spots in the 100 freestyle as Finucane (52.20), Kimmel (53.40) and Jackie Taylor (53.65) locked up 2nd, 3rd and 4th place, respectively.

Cohn secured another top-5 finish with a swim of 2:24.96 in the 200 breaststroke, good for 5th place. Sellers finished in 8th place at 2:29.81.

The final individual event of the meet saw Lineback and Phillips finish back-to-back in the 200 butterfly. Lineback went 2:06.43 and finished in 2nd, while Phillips swam a 2:08.00 that put her in 3rd.

USD wrapped up the meet by finishing 1st in the 400 free relay. Taylor, Stone, Kimmel and Finucane teamed to clock a 3:31.03 to end the day on a high note.

1-meter diving had Ellen Jajewski place 6th with a score of 171.30 and Molly Robson place 7th at 156.35.

The Toreros return to the pool on Jan. 26 when they host San Diego State for a 12 pm dual meet at the Sports Center Pool.
