SAN DIEGO -- Impressive performances by Danielle Taylor and Mackenna Briggs were not quite enough to take down USC as the Toreros dropped a 136-106 decision Friday afternoon at the Sports Center Pool.

Taylor represented the Toreros well in the sprints, highlighted by a second-place finish in the 50 free with a time of 24.40. She followed that performance with another second-place result in the 100 free, going 52.46.

Briggs produced two top-three finishes and had a strong showing in the 500 yard free. She placed third in the 200 free with a 1:53.77 and went 24.64 in the 50 free to finish third. Briggs posted a 5:08.65 to pace the Toreros in the 500 free and finish fifth.

The Trojans made the most of its first trip to the Sports Center Pool sweeping first-place finishes in each event.

Alex Hubel put together a nice day with a fourth-place finish in the 200 fly (2:02.66) and was out-touched for third place by just eight one-hundredths of a second. She added a fourth-place result in the 100 fly with a 56.73.

Lillian Benwell provided the highlight for the Toreros in the 200 IM, posting a 2:12.58 to finish fourth. She out-touched USC's Becca Mann by six one-hundredths of a second to claim the fourth-place result.

USD's A-squad for the 400 free relay -- consisting of Hubel, Sydney Wong, Taylor and Briggs -- produced a thrilling finish to the meet, challenging USC for the second place spot down to the final touch. However, the Trojans were able to edge the Toreros by three one-hundredths of a second.

Taylor Doherty, Benwell, Hubel and Taylor set the tone for USD early, opening the meet in the 200 medley relay with a 1:48.91 to finish third.

San Diego will have next week off before it plays host to its second consecutive Pac-12 team, UCLA, on Oct. 13 at noon (PT).
