SAN DIEGO - Danielle Taylor earned two first-place finishes to highlight San Diego's performance against UCLA on Friday afternoon at the Sports Complex Pool.
Taylor sprinted to back-to-back victories in the 50-yard freestyle (24.36) and 100 free (52.58). Her showings were among a number of impressive individual performances by the Toreros.
"Dani is a very talented swimmer and was overcoming some sickness, so seeing her win two events was exciting," said head coach Mike Keeler.
Despite the strong individual efforts, USD fell to the Bruins 160-96.
The Toreros got off to a quality start in the competition when its 200 medley relay team - consisting of Taylor Doherty, Allie Andrade, Maeve Murdoch and Taylor - opened with a third-place finish in 1:51.94.
Anna Lukenbach had a strong day in the distance events, registering a second-place result in the 1000 free with a time of 10:31.21. She added a third-place finish in the 500 free (5:11.48).
"What we like seeing are people progressing. Some of our freshmen have done a nice job of progressively getting faster" said Keeler.
Alex Hubel provided the highlights in butterfly for USD, finishing second in both the 200 fly (2:03.93) and in the 100 fly (57.20).
Taylor Doherty and Sam Terranova logged the best times for USD in the backstroke events. Doherty placed third in the 100 back (1:00.29), while Terranova finished fourth in the 200 back (2:10.36).
The Toreros capped the meet with a second-place showing in the 400 free relay. Sydney Wong, Hubel, Briggs and Taylor combined for a time of 3:34.51.
"We were really loose coming into this race and I think that's when we swim our best," said Keeler. "Our team really cares about each other and that helps us swim better."
San Diego will take next weekend off from competition and return to the pool Oct. 29 at Loyola Marymount.
