SAN DIEGO, Calif – The Toreros Women’s Swim and Dive team defeated Vanderbilt and Oregon State in a tri-meet at the USD Sportscenter Pool on Friday. It is the first time in program history that USD has beat a Pac 12 or an SEC shcool. The Toreros topped Vandy 127-104 and pulled away from OSU 140-91.

"It’s great for our program," Head Coach Mike Keeler said. "It’s our first win ever against a Pac-12 and SEC school and to do it in our first meet of the year is another feather in the cap for our program and it’s what our kids are training for."

Jackie and Danielle Taylor led the Toreros by placing first in two events each, totaling 36 points. Jackie took the 50 free (24.43) and the 100 free (52.54). She set the school record in both events last year.

Younger sister Danielle won the 200 free (1:53.65) in runaway fashion by besting the nearest competitor by over three seconds. The freshman also took the 200 butterfly (2:06.06).

In the 400 medley relay Sarah Reierson, Mackenna Briggs, Bri Jurries and Danielle Deiperine finished second with a combined time of 3:57.63. The Taylor sisters book-ended the 400 free relay (3:34.72). After strong performances from Liza Kuznetsova and Sarah Reierson kept the team in third through three swimmers, Jackie made a hard charge into second and finished just behind the Vandy anchor.

Kuznetsova, Briggs and M.K. Clancy all had strong collegiate debuts on Friday. Kuznetsova came in second in the 500 free (5:07.87) and fourth in the 1000 free (10:38.48). Briggs earned a fourth in the 50 free (25.02) and a fifth in 200 butterfly (2:10.95). Clancy added a second place finish in the 400 IM (4:36.02).

"Our freshman class has definitely been one of our most stellar classes in recent history," Keeler said. "We are pretty excited about the speed that they add to our program in a lot of different events."

Other top performers include Jurries who recorded a second place finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.17) and a fifth in the 200 free (1:58.56). Gwen Walter contributed a third in the 500 free (5:13.90) and a fifth in the 1000 free (10:38.67). Deiperine posted a 1:57.86 in the 200 free and a 2:28.06 in the breaststroke, good enough for third and fifth respectively. Reierson took third with a 2:09.72 in the 200 backstroke.

Newcomers Alexa Held and Elizabeth Petty won crucial points for the Toreros in one-meter diving competition. Held won the first event with a score of 143.25 while Petty took the next round with a 140.70. The 26 points proved to be the difference over Vanderbilt.

Tomorrow the team will be back in the pool to face UCLA.
