USC Too Much for Toreros

Jan. 29, 2010

LOS ANGELES - Faced with taking on the 9th ranked team in the nation Friday afternoon in the opening round of the ITA Kick-Off challenge, the USD women's tennis team encountered tough competition from the University of Southern California's starting six. The Toreros hung tough in both singles and doubles action but would eventually fall to the Women of Troy, 4-0, while competing on the courts of the Marks Tennis Center in Los Angeles, Calif.

San Diego (1-1) would battle hard in doubles, as sophomore Maja Sujica and freshman Laura Claus would wrap up Trojan teammates Danielle Lao and Alison Ramos in a late 6-6 tie on Court #2. But the USC pair would go on to secure the match's first victory with a break and then a hold by Lao for an 8-6 win. Wrapping up the doubles point for the Trojans (3-0) on Court 3, Cristala Andrews and Valeria Pulido overtook sophomore Marite Raygada and senior Justine Perl, 8-3.

San Diego looked to fight back in singles, but the strength of USC's lineup, which features four players in the ITA singles rankings, would prove to be too much, as the Trojans took three straight matches in consecutive sets to wrap up the victory.

The Toreros will look to rebound from Friday's loss tomorrow afternoon (Sat. Jan. 30th) when they square off against another Top-50 squad in #28 Louisiana State University in the consolation round of the ITA-Kick Off Tournament. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. followed by the championship round between USC and #35 Auburn (def. No. 28 LSU in opening match) at 5:30 p.m.
