TUCSON - The #45 USD women netters, coming off an impressive victory over #28 ranked Louisiana State University last weekend in the consolation round of the ITA Kick-Off, improved to 3-1 Friday afternoon, as the Toreros downed New Mexico State, 5-2, while playing on the courts of the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center at the University of Arizona.
The Toreros got off to a quick start and an early lead in doubles competition, as senior Justine Perl and sophomore Marite Raygada ran past Aggies, Ginet Pinero and Natalia Salem, 8-2, to kick start the San Diego attack on Court #3. New Mexico would counter however on Court #2, as Manon Sylvain and Isabela Kulaif snuck ahead of sophomore Maja Sujica and freshman Laura Claus, winning 8-6 over the Torero tandem.
But USD would not be denied and would eventually pull out the point with a victory on Court #1 from sophomore Juliette Coupez and senior Alexandra Demidova. The Torero pairing outlasted Aggie grouping, Sophia Marks and Laura Costa, 9-8 (7-5) to wrap up the initial advantage for San Diego.
The Toreros would take the first four matches played in singles, needing only four for a win. Coupez was the first to complete her match on Court #1, taking on Marks and downing the Aggie in straight sets (6-1, 6-1) for her second match win of the day. Raygada also picked up her second victory in identical fashion as teammate Coupez with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph on Court #6 over Elizabeth Tapia. Clinching the match for the Toreros, Sujica playing on Court #3 powered past Costa, 6-1, 6-2.
Additionally, freshman Lise Marbach picked up a win on Court #5 against Salum in three sets (2-6, 6-0, 6-0). For the day, San Diego would earn five points, surrendering only two singles victories to the Aggies.
The Toreros will pick up the racquet at 11 a.m. tomorrow, Feb. 6th, to square off against University of Arizona at 11 a.m. PT on the host site of LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
