SAN DIEGO - In one of the longest matches thus far this season, a contest that eclipsed the four hour mark, the #45 University of San Diego women's tennis team battled the Rainbow Wahine of University of Hawai'I, Manoa and came out with the victory, 5-2, on a very cool Wednesday afternoon at the USD West Tennis Courts. After a marathon of a match, the Toreros advance to 4-2 on the young spring season.

The match was a gauntlet of tough opponent play and heavy emotion from the beginning for San Diego. The Rainbows (1-4) , coming off a loss to WCC contender, Loyola Marymount University, came out ready to compete and hold their own against the No. 45 team in the nation.

In doubles, Hawai'i took the first match with ease at Court #2, as Katarina Poljakova Tatarku and Sophie Kobuch downed Torero tandem, sophomore Maja Sujica and freshman Laura Claus, 8-0. San Diego would bounce right back and grab a win on Court #1 when senior Alexandra Demidova and sophomore Juliette Coupez churned out an 8-5 triumph of Barbara Pinterova and Alyssa Nafarrete. In a dramatic clinching match, San Diego's steady pair in senior Justine Perl and sophomore Marite Raygada showed real gumption, as the Toreros brought down their Hawai'i counterparts, Aglae Van den Bergh and Natasha Zorec, 9-7, to take home the initial point.

With the close of a tough opening stanza in doubles, San Diego would hunker down and look to take the match edge in singles. After Hawai'i was able to even the score with a win at Court #4, USD would win the next two matches at Court #5 and #6. Demidova ran past Van den Bergh (6-1, 6-1) at No. 5 and Raygada shut down Nafarrete (6-0, 7-6) at No. 6.

The Toreros, standing in the lead at 3-1, would fall on Court #3, 6-2, 6-4, after Sujica was unable to get the win against Poljakova Tatarku, bringing the Rainbows one step closer. But through her domineering and confident play, Coupez, playing at Court #1, would put away the victory with a straight set win over Pinterova.

USD picked up the final point on Court #2, as Claus captured a tough win from Kobuch, 7-5, 7-6, pushing the final score to 5-2 in favor of the Toreros.

San Diego looks to reach five wins in the spring this Sun. Feb. 14th when the Toreros face the #40 Pepperdine Waves. Match is scheduled for 11 a.m. PT a the USD West Tennis Courts.
