SPOKANE, Wash. – The No. 65 University of San Diego women’s tennis team (2-3) fell to the Washington State University Cougars (10-1) 5-2 Saturday afternoon at The Stevens Center, snapping the Toreros’ winning streak.

The Toreros competed in three tight doubles matches to start the day with the Cougs coming out on top. Washington State’s Elizaveta Luzina and Lize Leenknecht picked up the first doubles match at the No. 1 spot defeating sophomores Marta Stojanovic and Mikayla Morkel-Brink 8-6. Washington State’s momentum continued as they pulled away with the doubles point after beating Shani Blecher and Idil Haciraifoglu at No. 3 with an 8-6 victory. Senior captain Anna Depenau and freshman Colomba Di Filippo were down 7-6 when the point was clinched.

In singles play, the Toreros were at a 0-2 deficit until Stojanovic defeated Cougs’ Maria Biryukova 6-4, 7-6(6). Di Filippo followed coming up with another solid win against Olga Musilovich 6-4, 6-4. Both Stojanovic and Di Filippo are on a three-match winning streak in singles. Although No. 2 and No. 4 would equalize the score, those would be the last wins of the day. WSU took back the lead after Elizaveta Luzina defeated Shani Blecher 7-6(6), 6-1. The Cougs’ Charlotte Koning took the victory over senior Idil Haciraifoglu 7-6(5), 6-2 to clinch the match.

The Toreros return to action in Washington tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. against WCC contender Gonzaga.
