SPOKANE, Wash. - The No. 65 University of San Diego women's tennis team (2-4, 0-1 WCC) had a tough weekend in Washington as they fell in a tight contest against Gonzaga (2-3, 1-0 WCC) Sunday afternoon at the Stevens Center.

The match was close from the start where both sides battled for what would be a critical doubles point. Sophomore Shani Blecher and senior Idil Haciraifoglu got the Toreros off to a solid start defeating Zag's Katie Edwards and Alexandra Tallas 8-7(0) at the No. 3 spot. The Zags would soon equalize the score in similar fashion. GU's Kylie Peek and Samantha Polayes took down sophomore duo Marta Stojanovic and Mikayla Morkel-Brink 8-7(4) on court 1. For the deciding point, Zag's Franziska Koehler and Melanie Yates prevailed defeating senior captain Anna Depenau and freshman Colomba Di Filippo 8-6 at the No. 2 spot.

The Bulldogs continued to extend their lead, taking matches at the No. 4 and 5 spots. Depenau got the Toreros on the board taking it to Zag’s Melanie Yates 6-1, 6-4. The remaining three matches would all go to three sets. After dropping the first set, Blecher rebounded taking the victory over Kylie Peek 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Haciraifoglu also had an impressive performance this afternoon defeating GU’s Isabell Klingert 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

The deciding point came down to the No. 2 spot. While Zag’s Samantha Polayes captured the first set, Stojanovic took back the momentum in the second. Polayes narrowly grabbed the third in a tiebreak, defeating Stojonavic 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(5).

Stay tuned for the Torero’s next match against the Arizona Wildcats, Friday at 12:00 p.m. in Tucson.
