Aggies Agitate Toreros in 'Sin City'

Feb. 19, 2010

LAS VEGAS - The #56 University of San Diego women's tennis team (4-4), competing in a two-match series hosted by the site school, University of Nevada Las Vegas, could not muster much luck in `Sin City', falling 6-1 to the #39 Aggies of Texas A&M Friday afternoon at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The Aggies earned the doubles point in convincing fashion, blanking the Toreros, all by identical 8-2 set victories in all three matches. The #52 doubles pair in the nation, Elze Potgieter and Nazari Urbina, saddled the new San Diego pairing of sophomores Juliette Coupez and Maja Sujica with the loss at Court #1. Competing at Court #2, freshman Laura Claus and senior Alexandra Demidova fell to A&M's Morgan Frank and Christi Liles while veteran Torero tandem of sophomore Marite Raygada and senior Justine Perl were bested on Court #3 by Stephanie Davidson and Sheri Olivier of Texas.

In singles action, USD would earn its sole point at No. 5, where Demidova earned a straight set victory over A&M's Davidson, 6-3, 6-3. But the Aggies were too much for the Toreros, taking four of five singles victories in straight sets themselves.

Playing at No. 1, Coupez came up short against #33 Potgieter, 6-4, 6-4, and one court over at No. 2, Claus was tripped up by top-ranked #69 Urbina, 6-3, 6-2. Over on Court #3, Sujica dropped a 6-3, 6-1 match to A&M's Morgan Frank while freshman Lise Marbach fell in identical set victories (6-3, 6-3) by A&M Aggie Frank at Court #4. And although she fought hard, forcing a third set tiebreaker, Raygada would eventually surrender a tough 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-3) contest at Court #6 to Liles.

The Toreros will look to rebound in tomorrow's match (Sat., Feb. 20th) against the UNLV Runnin' Rebels. Match is set to kick-off at 10 a.m. PT.
