March 11, 2010

SAN DIEGO - The University of San Diego women's tennis team snapped its four match losing streak Thursday, sweeping all nine contests against University of Pennsylvania for a 7-0 victory on the home courts of the USD West Tennis Complex.

With the win, the Toreros grab their fifth triumph of the 2010 dual-match season, now standing at an overall mark of 5-6, while Penn drops to 3-6 with the loss.

USD surrendered only one game in doubles at Court #2, otherwise picking up three efficient victories. At Court #1, Juliette Coupez and Maja Sujica quickly disposed of the Quaker pairing of Jules Rodin and Emily Wolf, 8-0. Over at Court #2, the Torero tandem of Alexandra Demidova and Marite Raygada shut down Alexa Ely and Jacqueline Wong, 8-1, while Justine Perl and Laura Claus on Court #3 downed Daniela DePaoli and Emma Whitfield, 8-0.

The Toreros continued to sail along in singles, racking up six points, all in straight sets. Coupez, the consistent No. 1 singles player for USD, captured a 6-3, 6-2 triumph from Ely. Right behind at Court #2, Claus took out Wolf, 6-1, 6-4. At Court #3, Sujica upset Rodin for a quick 6-1, 6-0 victory, while Lise Marbach, in her first match of the day, grabbed a 6-2, 6-4 decision from DePaoli at Court #4.

Wrapping up the sweep at Court #5 and #6, Demidova continued the streak by downing Wong, 6-3, 6-0 and Raygada shut the door on the Quakes, winning 6-1, 6-1 over Whitfield.
