Women Netters Down Dons, 6-1

March 12, 2010

SAN DIEGO - The University of San Diego women's tennis team wrapped up its second straight win at the USD Invitational, after taking University of San Francisco for a 6-1 victory Friday afternoon at the USD West Tennis Courts.

The Toreros return to the .500 mark with the win, now standing at an overall record of 6-6, while the Dons drop to 7-8.

USD wasted no time getting ahead of its WCC counterpart, sweeping all three doubles matches from USF. Taking the first match at Court #3, Justine Perl and Laura Claus notched an 8-2 win over Alana McMahon and Yurie Hashiguchi. Locking in the point at Court #1, Juliette Coupez and Maja Sujica defeated Jennifer-Lee Heinser and Melinda Akerbrant. And finally, playing at Court #2, Torero tandem of Alexandra Demidova and Marite Raygada finished off the sweep by outlasting Don duo, Cecilia Gratian and Julia Wartenburger, 8-7.

San Diego continued their winning ways in singles action, as the Toreros were victorious in all but one match. Demidova would start things off, downing Alana McMahon at Court #5 in straight sets.

The Dons, however, would counter at Court #1, as reigning WCC Player of the Year, Jennifer-Lee Heinser eclipsed the Toreros' No. 1 singles player, Juliette Coupez, 6-1, 6-1.

But USD pulled together and captured the final four matches, all of which came in consecutive sets. Raygada was the third Torero to tally a result, earning a 6-1, 6-1 triumph of Yurie Hashiguchi at Court #6. Soon to follow at Court #3, Sujica won a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Gratian, while Claus followed suit over at Court #2 with a 6-4, 6-1 knotting up of Julia Wartenburger.

Closing out the match for San Diego, Lise Marbach received her first win of the day by tying up Akerbrant at Court #4 by a final of 6-2, 7-5.

The Toreros will enjoy a day off before returning to the courts on Sunday for their third match in four days. San Diego will take on Cal State Northridge at 10 a.m. at the USD West Tennis Courts.
