San Diego Muscles Matadors for Third Straight Win

March 14, 2010

SAN DIEGO - The University of San Diego women's tennis team completed a perfect showing at the USD Invitational, finishing off the three match sweep Sunday afternoon in a 'battle of the bullfighters'. San Diego wrapped up the series with a 5-2 triumph over Cal State Northridge University, in a match that lasted just under five hours.

"Obviously, we had a really good weekend. Today was a hard fought battle and we really played as a team and won as a team," added Sherri Stephens (26th season), following the Toreros' third consecutive win.

For the first time in a month, the Toreros move beyond .500, improving to an overall mark of 7-6, while the Matadors drop to 5-3 on the season.

The marathon match kicked off with doubles, in which the first two contests went to a final of 9-7, resulting in a win for each team. San Diego would take the point in the deciding third match, as the order of finish was a straight one, two, three. Justine Perl and Laura Claus locked in the initial point for the Toreros at Court #3, with an 8-6 defeat of Nigora Sirojiddinova and Maria Pistalu.

In the individual competition, the Matadors quickly bounced back at Court #4, as Sirojiddinova took out Lise Marbach, 6-0, 6-1. But the dominate play of No. 1 singles player, Juliette Coupez, would set USD straight, as the sophomore from Lesquin, France tied up Brooke Doane in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.

San Diego then sailed from there on out, securing the match win with victories at Court #5 and then at Court #6. Alexandra Demidova at No. 5 disposed of Anna Yang while one court over, Marite Raygada hunkered down to power past Maria Pistalu, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-3.

The final two matches would result in a split for the Toreros and Matadors. At Court #2, Claus was forced to retire in the third set due to injury. Finishing up the contest for San Diego at Court #3, Maja Sujica battled Whitney Paluch to a three set, two tiebreaker win.

USD will close out its four match homestand with a bit of luck on Wednesday, St. Patrick's Day, against Washington State. The contest is set to get underway at 1:30 p.m.
