SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of San Diego women’s tennis team (5-7, 1-1 WCC) go 5-1 at home after getting a victory over Furman University (7-4) Friday afternoon at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center.

After an impressive doubles performance at spots 1 and 2, the Toreros continued their strong play in singles defeating the Paladins 5-2.

In doubles it was clear the Toreros would not be slowed down, clinching their third doubles point in a row. While Furman grabbed the first point at the No. 3 spot, the Toreros rallied to take the next two matches. Senior captain Anna Depenau and freshman Colomba DiFilippo equalized the scored defeating Paladins’ Blair Martin and Ansley Speaks 8-3. Sophomores Shani Blecher and Marta Stojanovic finished off the Paladins defeating Alex Moreno-Kaste and Katherine Oudin 8-5.

Depenau quickly got the Toreros on the board in singles, cruising past Paladins’ Karlee Bryde 6-1, 6-2. Depenau has won five singles matches in a row. While Furman picked up a win at the No. 6 spot, the rest of the afternoon would be smooth sailing. Stojanovic beat Paladins’ Alex Moreno-Kaste 6-3, 6-1, with DiFilippo clinching – defeating Furman’s Katherine Oudin 6-2, 6-3. Today’s match was DiFilippo’s fourth singles win in a row.

In the final two matches, Haciraifoglu made a major come back to defeat Paladins’ Kelly Sullivan in an exciting third-set tiebreak 4-6, 6-2, 1-0(10), while Furman’s Ansley Speaks pulled out the win over Blecher 6-7(5), 7-6(3), 1-0(6).

The Toreros return to action this Sunday against No. 34 St. Mary’s at 10:00 a.m. PT at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center.
