Toreros Open Up WCC with 6-1 win over Gonzaga

SPOKANE, Wash. - The No. 45 University of San Diego women's tennis team (6-6, 1-0) opened up WCC play with a 6-1 road win over Gonzaga (9-5, 0-3) Friday afternoon at the Spokane Racquet Club.

The Toreros, who have now won three matches in a row, took the doubles point after winning at the No. 1 and 3 spots. Laura Claus and Shani Blecher defeated Gonzaga's Katie Edwards and Kylie Peek 8-4 at the No. 1 and Cara Brown and Marta Stojanovic knocked off Alexandra Tallas and Franziska Koehler 8-5 at the No. 3.

The Toreros, who were coming off a huge win over No. 6 Nebraska, shined in singles play once again, winning five of their singles matches. Laura Claus, who is ranked No. 87 by the ITA, won 6-7, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1. Stephanie Hoffpauir, Anna Depenau, and Cara Brown all won their singles matches in two sets at the No. 2, 4, and 5 respectively. Shani Blecher also took care of business at the No. 3, outlasting Isabell Klingert 7-6, 7-6.

The Toreros continue their road trip Saturday at Portland (7-7, 1-2) at noon.
