SAN DIEGO - In what proved to be a grinding, hard-fought battle, the 75th-ranked University of San Diego women's tennis team upset the 41st ranked Marshall University Wednesday afternoon at the USD West Tennis Courts. Senior Alexandra Demidova put the winning touch on the match with her three set defeat at Court #5 of Deanna Bailey.

"Everybody wanted this today. We have all worked so hard day in and day out in practice and have gotten better and better each match. Everyone kept believing and we made it through," added Demidova, when asked about the team's performance against the ITA Top-50 opponent.

San Diego grabbed the early edge, sweeping the doubles point. Torero tandem of Justine Perl and Laura Claus got things started at Court #3 with a quick 8-3 disposing of the Herd's pairing of Thaddea Lock and Deanna Bailey. Following at Court #1, Juliette Coupez and Maja Sujica notched the day's first upset with an 8-6 herding of Marshall's No. 29 doubles team, Michaela Kissell and Dominika Zaprazna. Finishing off the sweep, Demidova alongside teammate Marite Raygada eclipsed Isabell Raich and Kristina Koprcina, 8-6.

The ball would bounce back the way of the Herd, as the Toreros' No. 1 singles player, Coupez, was forced to retire after just three games. Picking up her fellow USD teammate at Court #2, Claus cruised past Zaprazna, 6-1, 6-2, to take back the lead, 2-1. But Marshall evened the score at Court #4, as Catherine Kellner closed out Lise Marbach, 6-4, 6-2.

With three matches remaining, the Toreros were resilient, taking the final three points in the tiebreaker set, and ultimately wrapping up the upset.

At Court #6, Raygada extended her win streak to seven straight matches, as she court-marshalled Koprcina for the second time that day, this time by a final of 6-0, 3-6, 6-2.

Clinching the victory for San Diego, Demidova, in the final third set after being down 3-0, came back to win 7-5 against Bailey at Court #5, putting her stamp on the match in dramatic fashion.

Rounding out the trio of consecutive triumphs, Sujica powered past Raich, 6-4, 3-6, 6-0.

The Toreros will close out their final 2010 dual season homestand this Saturday against Nevada. The match is slated for a 10 a.m. start at the USD West Tennis Courts.
