San Diego Can't Hold Off Singles Storm Against Gaels

April 10, 2010

SAN DIEGO - The 64-ranked University of San Diego women's tennis team fought hard in its final home match of the 2010 regular dual season against West Coast Conference foe, 52-ranked St. Mary's College, but fell just short Saturday afternoon by a final of 4-3 at the USD West Tennis Courts.

The Toreros fall even with .500 at 10-10, while the Gaels improve to 12-6 overall in dual competition.

San Diego was able to lock down the initial advantage in doubles, but not before St. Mary's managed to secure the first win at Court #2. The Toreros bounced back at Court #1 and soon after at #3 to tally the tandem point.

At No. 1, Juliette Coupez and Maja Sujica powered past Alex Poorta and Claire Soper, 8-4. Justine Perl and Laura Claus at No. 3 battled the Gael pairing of Alita Fisher and Nienke Strijbis to an 8-all tie, but then rallied to capture the break point, 8-6, to wrap up the doubles stanza for the Toreros.

But the Gaels rebounded in the singles competition, taking the first two duels at Court #3 and soon after at #4 in straight sets. Marite Raygada put an end to the run at Court #6 with her tenth straight singles victory. Raygada closed out Molly Aloia, 6-3, 6-2, to improve to an impressive 15-4 in dual match play.

However, the WCC counterpart would capture the next two points at Courts #1 and #5 to sneak past the Toreros with the win.

With one match remaining, Laura Claus added one more USD win to the total to bring the match to its final at 4-3. Claus, in her second victory of the day, downed Catherine Isip at Court #2, 7-6 (4), 0-6, 6-3.

The Toreros have two matches remaining before entering the WCC Tournament. San Diego will face Loyola Marymount University Thurday, April 15th, and then close out the regular season at cross-town rival, San Diego State University, Monday, April 19th.
