SAN DIEGO - Senior Alexandra Demidova and sophomore Marite Raygada picked up compelling two-set singles victories at No. 5 and No. 6, but the 66th-ranked University of San Diego women netters dropped a 5-2 decision to cross town rival 75th-ranked San Diego State University at the Aztec Tennis Center Monday evening in the regular season finale.
The Toreros close out the regular season at the .500 mark (11-11), while the Aztecs power down at a dual record of 12-10.
"This was a great match that gave us great experience and we're excited about this weekend. I think we all played well and today's match was a good test run for this coming weekend...we just need to raise the level of energy and intensity. We are excited for the tournament," said senior Alexandra Demidova, following match's end.
The Aztecs got on the board first, claiming the doubles point with consecutive wins at Court #3 and soon after at Court #2. SDSU pairing of Alicia Aguilar and Olivia Colman defeated Laura Claus and Justine Perl, 8-3, at No. 3 while and Julia Trunk and Julia Wais teamed-up to clinch the point, closing out Demidova and Raygada, 8-2, at No. 2.
The Toreros and Aztecs would split the next four matches, as USD battled back after falling behind 3-0 at Court #3 and #4. Raygada tallied the first San Diego point, defeating Olivia Colman in straight sets at Court #6. With the win, Raygada placed herself atop the singles leader board, finishing the 2010 regular season individual campaign 17-4. Demidova continued the charge at Court #5, as the senior managed to pull away from Emma Cioffi, 7-6, 6-2.
But San Diego would be challenged in the final two matches, as the Toreros squared off against two nationally ranked opponents at Court #1 and #2.
Claus, at No. 2, following a first set blunder, grabbed set No. 2, 7-5, but could not hold on for the triumph over No. 91 Aguilar, falling 6-4 in the final set tiebreaker.
One court over at No. 1, after taking the first set, 6-2, Juliette Coupez battled to a draw in the second, ultimately surrendering the set victory to No. 56 Julia Trunk. Trunk would wrap up the remaining point for the Aztecs with a 6-0 close out in the third frame.
The Toreros get set for this weekend's WCC Championships at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego. The tournament begins Friday, April 23rd and contines throughout the weekend with the WCC Champion being crowned on Sunday.
