WCC 2015 Tournament Bracket Day One

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --
The University of San Diego women's tennis team (4-14, 3-7 WCC) avenged their regular season loss to the Pacific Tigers (8-13, 2-8 WCC) to continue on at the West Coast Conference Championships Wednesday afternoon at the Barnes Tennis Center. The Toreros bounced back after the doubles point and dominated singles play to upend the Tigers. The squad has won their first round at the West Coast Conference tournament for 12 consecutive seasons.

As doubles play commenced, juniors Shani Blecher and Marta Stojanovic proved to be unstoppable at the No. 2 spot. The pair defeated Pacific's Daria Labintseva and Gergana Boncheva 8-0. However, the Tigers put forth a strong performance in the remaining two sets. On court one, Tigers' Hana Ritterova and Masarova edged out No. 89 junior Dana Oppinger and freshman Drew Spinosa 8-5. Pacific later clinched at the No. 3 spot.

In singles play, Pacific managed to extend their lead to two after a victory at the No. 6 spot. Though, that would be the Tigers' last point of the day. The Toreros stayed resilient as Blecher jumpstarted the squad's comeback after a straight set victory over Gergana Boncheva. Spinosa equalized the score for the Toreros defeating Pacific's Iveta Masarova 6-3, 6-2. Stojanovic, playing at the No. 1 spot, took the lead for USD picking up a solid 6-4, 7-5 victory over Tigers' Hana Ritterova.

Leading 3-2, the Tigers would not go down without a fight. Both junior Mikayla Morkel-Brink and Oppinger battled in third sets. After a dominant third set, Morkel-Brink clinched the match for the Toreros -- knocking off Pacific's Regina Suarez 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

The Toreros get set for action tomorrow against No. 1 seeded Pepperdine April 23rd at 9:00 a.m. -- PT. The 2014 champions are ranked No. 19 nationally and feature a roster that includes No. 1 singles player Lorraine Guillermo. Guillermo is slated at No. 11 in the ITA national singles rankings.
