SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's tennis team pulled off a 4-2 upset of No. 38 Pepperdine to win their first-ever West Coast Conference championship on Saturday afternoon at the Barnes Tennis Center. Coming into the tournament as the No. 3 seed, the Toreros had to rally back after losing the doubles point to take four singles victories and make team history.

The victory is especially sweet for USD (13-9, 9-2 WCC) since the Waves knocked off the Toreros in last year's WCC final by the same score of 4-2. This was USD's first win over Pepperdine since 1990, a string of 32 matches.

The day started out with No. 1 seed Pepperdine taking doubles victories at No. 1 and No. 3. Maja Sujica and Anna Depenau tallied the lone USD doubles victory of the day at No. 2 with an 8-5 win. They improved to 19-1 on the year in dual doubles and 23-5 overall, one win short of tying the USD record for most doubles wins by a pair in a season.

Singles play was where the Toreros, ranked No. 71 coming into the tournament, were able to halt Pepperdine's momentum. Among the highlights of the singles wins for USD was Juliette Coupez's 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 clinching win over No. 63 Khunpak Issara at No. 1.

Laura Claus won her team-best eighth-straight singles contest with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 victory at No. 3. No. 112 Depenau also posted a win with her 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 comeback at No. 4. Sujica was the other Torero to record a win on the day as she came out on top by a score of 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 to tally her seventh-consecutive victory.

USD earns an automatic bid for the NCAA Championships which are set to begin on May 17. This will be the second-straight year the USD women will make an NCAA tournament appearance. The NCAA women's tennis selection show is scheduled for Tuesday, May 1 at 2:00 pm PT.
