AUSTIN, TX- University of San Diego senior Juliette Coupez captured the women's open singles championship at the Longhorn Invitational Sunday morning from the University of Texas, while junior Laura Claus bounced back from a loss on Saturday to win the singles consolation northeast draw in the final day of competition.
Coupez, who went a perfect 4-0 in singles over the weekend, had to battle back after dropping her first set to Cierra Gayton-Leach of Texas 4-6 in this morning's final. Coupez would go on to take the second and third sets 6-2 and 6-3, respectively to earn the victory and the singles crown.
Claus also finished off her weekend on a positive note when she posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Texas Tech's Caroline Sterck, giving Claus a 3-1 singles record over the three-day tournament.
Unfortunately, Coupez and Claus were unable to pull of the championship sweep as they fell to the Longhorns' Gayton-Leach and Noel Scott in the open doubles final by a score of 8-5.
"It was nice to play new players. We fought through the heat and spent lots of hours on the court," said Coupez following the tournament. "We played really well in doubles for our first partnership and I'm really happy I won the singles title. I'm glad we played well and for me it gives me confidence going into my last year at USD."
The Toreros continue fall tournament play Oct. 1st-10th when Coupez and Stephanie Hoffpauir compete in the ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
