SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's tennis team finished the first day of competition at the USTA/ITA Southwestern Regional Championships on Thursday afternoon at the Barnes Tennis Center. The Toreros captured a total of seven wins on the day- five in singles and two in doubles.

Leading the way was Laura Claus, who won two matches to advance to the round of 32. Claus topped Xenia Suworowa of Hawaii in the round of 132, 6-1, 6-2, before going on to defeat UC Irvine's Sarah Stadfeldt 6-1, 6-3.

Anna Depenau had a first-round bye and defeated Claudia Rezzeto of Loyola Marymount 7-5, 6-4 to move into the round of 32. Stephanie Hoffpauir also took advantage of a first-round bye before earning a 6-0, 6-2 win over Hawaii's Martina Kostalova to advance to the round of 32.

Marta Stojanovic split her two singles contests on the day. She defeated Paola Cos of UC Santa Barbara 6-4, 7-6 in the round of 132 before falling 6-4, 6-4 to LMU's April Bisharat in the round of 64.

Cara Brown fell to Jamie Raney of UC Riverside in first-round action by a score of 7-6, 4-6, 6-3. Brown will play in the consolation singles draw on Friday.

Idil Haciraifoglu, who had a first-round bye, was upended by UC Irvine's Marivick Mamiit 6-3, 6-1 in the round of 64. Alexandra Victorsson also had a first-round bye but lost her round of 64 contest to Kristin Buth of San Diego State 6-3, 6-1. Haciraifoglu and Victorsson will both compete in the singles consolation draw on Friday.



Depenau and Victorsson teamed in doubles to post an 8-5 win over Adriana Radinovic and Razzeto of LMU in the round of 64. Claus and Stojanovic notched an 8-2 win of their own in the round of 64, topping UC Irvine's Alison Klein and Nakisa Vahdat.

Brown and Hoffpauir had a first-round bye and will play in the round of 32 on Friday.
