SAN DIEGO, Calif – The Toreros women’s tennis team (3-1) will travel to Arizona this weekend to take on two ranked opponents. On Friday USD will face the No. 58 Arizona Wildcats in Tucson, Ariz. before taking on the No. 27 Arizona State Sun Devils in Tempe, Ariz. Saturday.
LAST TIME OUT: The Toreros beat conference foe Pacific last weekend 4-1 at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center. Shani Blecher and Marta Stojanovic led the way earning a victory in the No. 2 doubles spot before each earning a point in singles play.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS: In 18 previous meetings with the Toreros, the No. 58 Wildcats are 15-3 and undefeated at home. The two teams met in San Diego last February when the Wildcats won 6-1. USD last beat Arizona 4-2 in 2013 when the wildcats were ranked No. 28. The series has been tightly contested over the last five seasons with Arizona holding a 3-2 record against USD since 2011.
The Wildcats are coming off of a 6-1 loss to No. 31 Rice last weekend in Houston, Tex. Junior Lauren Marker is the team’s top ranked player at No. 39. Marker and doubles partner Shayne Austin are also ranked at No. 56.
The team is led by Arizona alum Vicky Maes. This will be her 15th year at the head of the program.
SCOUTING THE SUN DEVILS: The No. 27 Sun Devils have matched up against the Toreros 19 times and lead the series 17-2. ASU last played USD in 2014, in that match the Sun Devils earned a 5-2 victory in Tempe. The team was idle last week and last played the University of Texas El Paso on January 29 in Tempe, ASU won 6-1.
Senior No. 36 Desirae Krawczyk leads ASU in the rankings followed by junior No. 98 Kassidy Jump. On the doubles side, Alexandra Osborne and Ebony Panoho represent the Sun Devils at No. 54.
Sheila McInerney is in her 32nd season at ASU. The USC alum has racked up 463 career wins, the second most in school history, with the Sun Devils. Her team has appeared in the NCAA tournament 30 of her 31 years and is currently on a streak of 28 consecutive tournament selections.
HOME COOKING: The Toreros open their spring season with nine of their first 11 matches scheduled at home. USD’s two road matches come February 12-13 at Arizona and Arizona State, the alma maters of Head Coach Stephens (Arizona) and Assistant Coach Nadia Abdala (Arizona State).
LEADING THE CHARGE: At the top of the Toreros line-up is senior Marta Stojanovic. The senior behavioral science major from Belgrade, Serbia has been a leader on and off the court for the Toreros. She is a two-time WCC All-Academic honoree and has been a part of the WCC Commissioner’s Honor Roll all three years.
Fellow senior Dana Oppinger is another highlight on Head Coach Sherri Stephens’ squad. Oppinger transferred to USD last season after spending two years at Marshall University. In her first year in the WCC she and doubles partner Drew Spinosa earned All-WCC Honorable Mention.
MEET THE COACH: Sherri Stephens enters her 32nd year with the Toreros and has amassed 363 wins at USD. Stephens has led the Toreros to 11 NCAA Tournament Appearances and has coached 12 Division I All-Americans.
In 1999 Stephens guided National Singles Champion and National Player of the Year Zuzana Lesenarova.
