April 13, 2016

SAN DIEGO, Calif - The Toreros women's tennis team (7-7, 4-3 WCC) will travel to Los Angeles, Calif. this weekend to face the Loyola Marymount Lions (7-10, 2-3 WCC) on Friday at 1:30 p.m. The following day the Toreros will face the No. 10 Pepperdine Waves (15-2, 5-0 WCC) in Malibu, Calif. at 12 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT: San Diego suffered a 4-2 defeat at the hands of the San Francisco Dons last Friday in their home finale. The Toreros jumped out to an early lead after fantastic performances in doubles play. Marta Stojanovic and Maria-Paula Torres earned a 6-0 victory in the No. 2 spot before Shani Blecher and Colomba DiFilippo sealed the point with a 6-0 win of their own on the No. 3 court.

Drew Spinosa was the only Torero to earn a win in singles play. It was the sophomore’s fifth singles win this season.

SCOUTING THE LIONS: The Lions have conference wins over Pacific and Saint Mary’s this season. Both of LMU’s WCC victories have come at home and the Lions are 5-4 on their home court compared to 2-6 on the road this season. Pepperdine, Portland and Gonzaga make up the Lions’ three conferences losses this season.

Freshman Elvira Juravliova leads the Lions with 13 dual match victories this season. The Moldova native has been a staple in the No. 4 spot and has only dropped two matches this season. Juravilova and Jessica Perez are the Lions’ most successful doubles pair with a 7-5 mark this season in the No. 1 spot.

Augustin Moreno is in his first season at Loyola Marymount after spending the past nine seasons with the South Florida Bulls. Moreno has a 127-75-career record as a head coach. As a player Moreno participated in the 1988 Olympics as well as the 1988 French Open.

SCOUTING THE WAVES: The Waves have had a fantastic season and are undefeated in the WCC with wins over LMU, Saint Mary’s, Pacific, Portland and Gonzaga. Pepperdine’s two losses have come at the hands of current No. 1 California and No. 5 Ohio State. The Waves have made 27 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.

The Waves are led by freshman star No. 5 Luisa Stefani. The Brazil native has spent time as the top ranked player in the nation this season and holds a 29-5 record this season. She has tallied a 20-4 record against ranked opponents. She and Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai form the nations No. 23 doubles pair and have a 16-4 mark. Matea Cutura and Christine Maddox are the Waves’ top ranked tandem with a No. 16 ranking. Cutura and Maddox are 14-6 this season.

Per Nilsson is in his second season with the Waves after leading his team to an 18-7 record and a WCC championship last season. Nilsson received WCC Coach of the Year honors after his first season in Malibu. He came to the Waves after serving as the head coach for the Mississippi State men’s program for the previous seven seasons.

DIFILIPPO... THE ANCHOR: Junior Columba DiFilippo has been an incredibly solid performer for the Toreros this season just one year after missing her entire sophomore season with an injury. The Santiago, Chile native has earned a 9-3 record in dual matches this season and is 4-1 in WCC matches this season.

MEET THE COACH: Sherri Stephens enters her 32nd year with the Toreros and has amassed 367 wins at USD. Stephens has led the Toreros to 11 NCAA Tournament Appearances and has coached 12 Division I All-Americans.
