Toreros take on Aztecs Wednesday

SAN DIEGO, Calif - The Toreros women's tennis team (7-9-1, 4-5 WCC) will visit cross-town rival San Diego State (6-14, 0-3 Mountain West) on Wednesday to conclude their regular season. The Aztecs took last year's meeting and lead the all-time series 24-14. The Toreros beat the Aztecs in 2014 by the score of 4-3.

LAST TIME OUT: San Diego dropped two matches this past weekend while on the road at Loyola Marymount (9-11, 3-4 WCC) and No. 10 Pepperdine (17-2, 7-0 WCC). The Toreros tested the Lions in 4-3 affair before falling just short. Drew Spinosa, Maria-Paula Torres and Colomba DiFilippo all earned points in singles play against LMU. The No. 10 Waves took a 4-0 decision from San Diego in Malibu, Calif.

SCOUTING THE AZTECS: San Diego State currently sits in 10th in the Mountain West Conference standings and comes into the match off of a 7-0 loss to No. 39 Fresno State. The Aztecs and Toreros have faced eight common opponents this season - Arizona State, Kentucky, Hawaii, Saint Mary's, Pepperdine, Cal State Fullerton, UC Irvine and Loyola Marymount - USD is 3-5 while State hold a record of 1-7 against those teams.

The Aztecs have had their most success in the No. 4 spot this season with a team record of 11-9 in dual matches. Paola Diazde Regules leads State with six wins in the four spot and is second overall with eight dual match victories this season. Senior Isabelle Hoorn leads all Aztecs with nine wins in dual match play. Hoorn is also the only Aztec without a loosing record in duals at 9-9. San Diego State has run into some trouble in the No. 1 spot with a record of 3-17 in the top spot.

Peter Mattera is in his 23rd season at San Diego State and entered the season with a 321-222 record with the Aztecs. He is the longest-tenured coach at State. The team has seen 17 winning seasons with Mattera as well as 12 NCAA Tournament births. The San Diego State alum has also earned three Mountain West Coach of the year honors.

3-6-9: The Toreros have found their most success in the No. 3 and No. 6 spots this season with nine wins in each slot in the lineup. Colomba DiFilippo leads all players with nine dual match victories, eight of which have come in the No. 6 spot.

Drew Spinosa, Dana Oppinger and Sophia Chow have all added three wins in the No. 3 spot to move the Toreros total to nine. The team is 9-6 in the No. 3 spot and 9-3 in the No. 6 spot.

MEET THE COACH: Sherri Stephens enters her 32nd year with the Toreros and has amassed 367 wins at USD. Stephens has led the Toreros to 11 NCAA Tournament Appearances and has coached 12 Division I All-Americans.

In 1999 Stephens guided National Singles Champion and National Player of the Year Zuzana Lesenarova.
