Three Toreros Named to WCC All-Academic Team

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's tennis team's Laura Claus, Anna Depenau, and Cara Brown were all named to the WCC All-Academic Team the conference office announced Tuesday. The Toreros were the only team in the conference with three honorees.

Senior Laura Claus (Wiesbaden, Germany) holds a remarkable 3.96 GPA while double-majoring in Finance and Business Administration. Claus played primarily at the No. 1 spot in both singles and doubles this season and earned an ITA ranking of No. 79 in singles and No. 68 in doubles (w/ Shani Blecher). This is the third consecutive year that Claus has earned WCC All-Academic. Claus was also named an ITA Scholar Athlete in 2011 and 2012, and figures to receive that honor again this season.

Senior Cara Brown (South Bend, Ind.) is one of the Toreros co-captains and is in the midst of a career season. Brown, who has 3.73 GPA and is majoring in Visual Arts, started out 2013 with an 8-2 singles record at the No. 6 spot in the Toreros singles lineup. Brown finished out the season with a 13-9 singles record, while going 9-7 in dual matches. Brown was an All-Academic Honorable Mention selection last season, while also being named an ITA Scholar Athlete in both 2011 and 2012.

Junior Anna Depenau (Geilenkirchen, Germany) is a Marketing major and holds a 3.87 GPA. Depenau, who was a WCC All-Academic selection last year as well, is tied for the team lead in dual singles wins with 12. Depenau has played at the No. 3, 4, and 5 spots in the Toreros' singles lineup this season while posting a 12-6 record. Depenau is heating up at the right time as she has won seven of her last ten singles matches heading into this week's WCC Tournament.



The Toreros begin the WCC Tournament Wednesday April 24 at the Barnes Tennis Center when they face the No. 9 seed Gonzaga for a 9:30 a.m. match. The Toreros, who are the No. 4 seed, will play the winner of No. 5 San Francisco and No. 8 Portland on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. should they defeat Gonzaga.
