SAN DIEGO, Calif. - University of San Diego senior tennis player Juliette Coupez has been named West Coast Conference Singles Player of the Month for the month of April, announced by the conference on Tuesday. This is the first time Coupez has won the honor for singles. In 2011, she and doubles teammate Stephanie Hoffpauir earned doubles team of the month honors for the month of April.
This past month, Coupez (Lesquin, France) won the clinching match in the WCC final on Apr. 28 with her come-from-behind 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over then-No. 63 Khunpak Issara of Pepperdine to help the Toreros claim their first-ever WCC championship. She went 5-3 on the month playing exclusively at No. 1 and went 2-2 against ranked opponents.
Aside from her win over Issara, Coupez defeated then-No. 86 Jenny Jullien of Saint Mary's (Apr. 27) in the WCC semifinal to help give USD the finals berth. She came up big when her team needed her by winning all three of her singles matches in the WCC tournament. She also moved into fourth place among USD's career singles wins leaders with her 77th career victory.
Coupez was a first-team All-WCC selection in singles this season and is 23-9 overall (15-6 dual). She was also selected to the second team in doubles (w/ Laura Claus).
Coupez and the Toreros are set to play in their first round contest in the NCAA tournament on Friday, May 11 against Vanderbilt at 11:00 am at Marks Stadium on the campus of USC.
