The USD women's tennis begins its fall schedule on Friday as it competes at the SDSU Fall Classic I this weekend. The annual tournament runs from Friday, Sept. 29, through Sunday, Oct. 1, and features seven teams including the Toreros.
The list of opponents visiting the Aztec Tennis Center this weekend, besides host San Diego State, include Grand Canyon University, Cal State Northridge, Loyola Marymount, San Diego, the University of Texas-El Paso, and San Jose State.
The tournament will begin at 9 a.m. each day with two doubles brackets and a doubles round-robin event. Five brackets of singles play will immediately follow doubles competition.
On Friday the Toreros will begin with doubles play with three teams competing at 9:00 am. In the Red Bracket, Daniela Morales and Gemma Garcia will take on the Grand Canyon duo of Lo Pomo/Washuk, and Kati Kukaras and Carolin Nonnenmacher will take on LMU’s De Lucas/Tumosa. In the Gold Bracket, Sophia Chow and Maria-Paula Torres will compete against SJSU’s Kobayashi/Sendar.
In singles action the Toreros will be represented by Sophia Chow, Maria Paula-Torres, Carolin Nonnenmacher and Daniela Morales. In 10:00 a.m. matches, Chow will face Alicia Dinkelmeyer from CSUN in the Red Bracket, and Torres will compete against Lana Rinaldi of Grand Canyon in the Black Bracket. In matches expected to start at 11:15 a.m., Nonnenmacher will face Kylie Washuk of Grand Canyon in the White Bracket, and Morales will face Martina Lo Pomo of Grand Canyon in the Blue Bracket.
Admission to Fall Classic I is free and fans are encouraged to park in P7 on the corner of 55th Street and Montezuma Road. Parking is $2 per hour and is always required in P7. The Aztec Tennis Center is located just beyond Tony Gwynn Stadium, SDSU Softball Stadium and the Aztec Aquaplex on the northwest edge of campus.
