POMONA, Calif. - Under warm conditions, the USD Toreros ran their first, opening track meet of the season at Pomona-Pitzer College. All USD distance athletes solely raced the 3,000 meters.

"It was a great way to kick off our season. We are off to a good start, but still have plenty of racing growth," commented Coach Will Guarino. "We've been together for three weeks and so far we are heading in the direction of maintaining volume, health, pace work, and overall race preparation. I am glad to be able to measure the race fitness of our athletes."

The women's team was led by senior Gillian Gorelik, who finished third with a time of 10:34. This was Gillian's best start in the 3,000m in her four years. Next came sophomore Lindsay Benster (10:56), then freshman Sarah Kapple (11:05), followed by freshman Ashley Mitchell (11:08) and sophomore Dani LeMieux (11:15).

The men's team was led by freshman Adam Bodine, also finishing third with a time of 9:03. After Bodine, came Malik Hayes (9:22), Spencer Hoffman (9:23), Connor Brandt (9:28), and Christopher Spinney (9:42).

After a favorable start, the Toreros look forward to a great 2014 spring season. Their next race is March 28 at 4:00 p.m. when they compete in the Aztec Distance Carnival.
