Feb. 27, 2013
Claremont, CA - Torero track is off to a promising start this last Saturday at the Rossi Relays in Claremont, CA. For our freshmen, it was their first taste of the collegiate track and field scene. Every athlete rose to the occasion and started off the 2013 season on a right foot.
The women's distance medley kicked off the day with Junior Gillian Gorelik running a speedy 1200 meter leg that was finished off with an outstanding performance by Freshman Ashton Padberg running the mile. Padberg then continued her success through the 3000 meter finishing closely behind the "Dark Horse" Senior Lauren Infusino. Due to Infusino's staggering performance she was named Athlete of the week!
Also in the 3000 meter, was Senior Kristy Koenes, who proved that she is back on the track and ready to tear it up this 2013 season! A break through performance came from Sophomore Kathryn Adamson as she showed her mother and sister, whom were in attendance this Saturday, that she could run circles around her competition.
As for the men, Senior Team Captains Jacob Bruce and Ciano Ordinola started off the distance medley with the 1200 meters. Bruce's performances in both the 1200 meter leg of the distance medley and the 3000 meter were one for the books, which is why he was named Athlete of the Week for the Toreros. However, we cannot ignore Freshmen Malik Hayes whom started his season off with an 800 meter split of 1:58. He later finished the day off with the 3000 meter, proving that no matter what distance, he has the "need for speed."
Overall, this weekend showed that there is much promise in the future for our Toreros as they begin this 2013 track season.
