La Jolla, CA - Our Torero runners shifted into a new gear this last Saturday. With it only being the second meet of the 2013 track season there is much to look forward to as our runners continue their season. This was meet to test the number of colleges within San Diego, to see who has the potential to succeed. Beautiful Sun Diego provided ideal weather for our Torero runners to tear it up on the track.

The meet started out with junior Gillian Gorelik leading the Toreros with a 4th place finish in the 1500m. Followed by an outstanding performance by young gun, freshman Malik Hayes, who made up a significant gap in the final turn to win the second heat of the 1500m.

With these brillant performances under their belts, the Toreros then headed into the 800meters. Freshman Olivia Houser kept the winning streak alive winning her second heat of the 800m in the final stretch. The energy was maintained, yet again, by young gun freshman Malik Hayes who won his heat of the men's 800 meters. This win now titles USD Torero and MVP Malik Hayes as the fastest 800 meter runner of the San Diego colleges. These outstanding freshman perfromances prove there is a bright future for the Torero program.

Last up was the Torero dominant race of the 3,000 meters. With the women at the line the audience was in for an exciting race in both the first and second heats. In the first heat, Toreros were lead by freshman Ashton Padberg, who blazed her way to her second PR of the day. This performance was followed by another win from freshman Oliva Houser earning her and Padberg the titles of co-MVPs. However, Houser did not run the second heat of the 3,000 meters alone, close behind was junior Jessica McCarthy and Senior Mackenzie Entrikin who held off the fast approaching Point Loma runners resulting in a Torero sweep!

Outstanding performances stretched beyond just those of the MVPs this weekend. Honorable mentions go out to many of the athletes who PRed this weekend and ran lights out! Senior Maddie Levine put on a show for her visiting family and ran well in both the 1500 and the 3,000 meters. But do not count out a massive PR by junior Vikki Hambley who ran her best 3,000 meter race to date!

A huge congratulations goes out to the entire Torero squad for one of the best results this program has seen! Toreros are back on the track and hope to continue their success as the 2013 season continues!

Look to see the Toreros fly around the track this upcoming weekend at the Aztec Invitational!
