SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The USD track team competed in the Aztec Invite Friday evening at the San Diego State Sportsdeck. The Toreros competed in the 1,500m and the 3k.

The first race set the tone for what would be a wonderful evening for both groups. Andrea Hughes and Sarah Kapple ran the 2nd and 3rd fastest times in the 1500m in program history.

"It was special for us all to see, as both seniors continue to drive our young track program to new heights," Head Coach Guarino said. "They came to challenge our 1500m school record and they did not disappoint, helping elevate our program to a new level. "

Andrea Hughes finished in 4:36.11, with Kapple coming in right behind her (4:36.86). The next Torero finishers were Cassidy Kuhn (38th; 4:45.22) and Ashley Mitchell (41st; 4:46.97).

"I am proud of our group, athletes delivered overall on the objectives that we set out. We collectively have the fastest group as a whole that the University has ever put together," Guarino explained. "We as a team want more and will look to correct some of the opportunities that we cross as we begin a new season. Love this team and love their spirit. They put on a smile on me daily as we enjoy the days that lead up to and from competition."

Beth Wade led USD in the 3k, finishing in 10:56.17. Amanda Brodow clocked in at 11:09.82 and was followed quickly by Shannan Conlon (11:10.82).

On the men's side, Max Pedrotti grabbed fifth in 3k with a time of 8:41.66, which was is also a school record. Liam Burke also had a top ten finish, clocking in at 8:46.48.

"Max Pedrotti aggressively took the pace out and lead at 65 seconds. His fitness is so strong that he had to second guess himself and adjust to the 3km pace," Guarino said. "Liam and the other boys from LMU and the lone USC guy reacted and attacked the next few laps. It was exciting to see TJ Hodges run a mile time that was better than his time in high school. He had a mile to go and took the PR challenge. TJ ran number three for us, but his racing was equally as aggressive for he did not have guys to work off of. Max eventually put it into overdrive as he attempted to chase the guy from USC. His time is now recorded as the new USD 3km."

Matthew Smith ran the 1,500m in 4:08.46, the top time amongst USD runners.

The Toreros compete at UC San Diego next Saturday in the California Collegiate Invite.
