LA JOLLA, Calif. - The USD Torero Track Team competed with great success in the California Collegiate Invite Saturday afternoon. After a promising week of training, the men and women turned to their speed training as they prepared for both the 800m and 1500m races. Throughout the meet, all athletes continuously performed with tremendous talent and strength, returning to USD with many personal bests and individual victories.

“We had a good Torero team day.” Head Coach Will Guarino said. “Our speed people really pulled through in the 800m. It was good to walk out of Triton stadium with four victories in four different heats.”

Sarah Kapple (2:17), Olivia Houser (2:22), and Olivia Gonzalez (2:32.17) all delivered exceptionally notable performances in the 800m run. All three ladies won their respective heats, out-kicking their opponents and claiming victory.

“Sarah ran lights out as she began the middle distance show and had a stellar race with both a victory and a personal best,” Guarino commented. “Olivia Houser has raced in three different races this year. She has won her heats in the 5km, 1500m and the 800m. Today she too had a personal record and a huge victory for the mighty Toreros. Olivia Gonzalez had never won a race and it was so good to see her bring one for our team.”

On the men’s side of the 800m run, Logan Owens swept the field with a time of 1:58, and was closely followed by teammate Om Kanwar (2:00).

“Logan Owens too has never won a race, and the young sophomore showed tremendous heart as he stole the 800m show and he nearly had a personal best,” Gaurino said.

The 1500m race was remarkable for the Toreros. Sophomore Samantha Mattice led the female athletes, with a personal best time of 4:40. Andrea Hughes and Ashley Mitchell followed closely, also demonstrating amazing performances. Junior Matthew Smith led the men with a time of 4:10, a personal best. Sophomores Max Pedrotti (4:12) and TJ Hodges (4:17) also achieved personal bests.

“The mentality of the group continues to improve and so do the racing tactics and the commitment from team members on the sidelines,” Gaurino said. “Love to see the team continue to grow in the direction that moves our competitive culture forward.

By the end of the competition, the team had claimed four individual victories, and 50% ran a personal best time, an amazing feat considering these Toreros are more accustomed to longer distance races.

They hope to continue their success success when they compete at the Mt. Sac Relays on April 14.
