Track breaks records at Pamona Invitational
April 12, 2011
Pomona, CA - The Men and Women's track team headed up north to Pomona, CA to compete in the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational. USD was lead by Kristy Koenes and Gillian Gorelick on the women's side. On the men's side, performances by Kyle Carruthers and Chris Flaherty were highlighted as well.
Gillian Gorelick, freshmen, set a new school record in the 1500m with a blazing 4.43.92. This is the equivalent to just about a 5:04 minute mile. Coach Guarino commented "Seeing all the hard work that Gillie has put in day in and day out, we are glad to see it paying off." This was a personal best for Gillie who commented "I felt very strong and very relaxed, the competition in my heat was perfect and set me up for the time I ran." Other results on the women's side include, Kristy Koenes who competed in the 5k and ran a personal best of 17:36:04 good enough for a 5th place finish in a very fast race.
The men's team had many highlights throughout the day but the 5k race was the one that stuck out the most. Freshmen Kyle Carruthers set a personal best in the 5k running a strong time of 15:53:01. Kyle said "The individuals in the race went out fast and I wanted to stick close to them and get comfortable and as soon as I saw my competitors getting tired I knew I had to capitalize on it." Also on the men's side, Chris Flaherty continues to put together a strong season by eclipsing the 4:00 mark in the 1500m with a time of 3:58:70.
Look for the Toreros to be back in action this Thursday at the Cal-Tech Invite beginning at around 5pm. As well sophomores Chris Flaherty and Emerald Raney will be competing in the prestigious Mount Sac Relays on Friday. Come out and support your USD Track and Field team.
