LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The Torero track team competed in the first day of the Bryan Clay Invite Thursday evening. The night was highlighted by a pair of record-breaking times in the 3k steeplechase. Sarah Kapple finished in 10:51.82 and Matthew Smith broke his own school record with a time of 9:45.0. Additionally five Toreros ran personal best times in the 5k.

"The atmosphere at Bryan Clay was that of a carnival," Guarino explained. "Music playing, flags waving, and the wind was blowing as the backdrop of the San Bernardino mountains was perfect for the festive track atmosphere. I do feel this is a unique meet as it consistently attracts schools from throughout the country."

For Kapple, it was her first time running the steeplechase and her final time is a great introductory time for the NCAA. To put her time in persepective, American record holder Emma Coburn, finished in 10:50 in her steeple debut.

The steeplechase has 28 barriers, seven of which are followed by a treacherous water pit, and most approaches are driven towards just getting over the stable wood hurdles. An athlete must have a strong mentality to not only attempt it, but also to finish. One misstep can send you directly to the hurdle or to the ground quickly.

Smith broke his own record, clocking in at 9:45. "It was great to see Matt run strong through the hurdles," Head Coach Guarino said. "The last couple of laps cost him some valuable time, but when lactic acid sets in, there isn't much that an athlete can do but put up a strong fight."

Friday night's main attraction will be Andrea Hughes, who races the 5k at 9:30 p.m. with a chance to break another school record.
