Sam Mattice Breaks School Record in 10k
April 14, 2016

ASUZA, Calif. - Broken records was the theme for the USD track team Thursday evening with the Toreros competing in both the Mt. Sac Relays and the Bryan Clay Invitational. Sophomore Sam Mattice highlighted the evening with a school record in the 10k with a time of 34:54.88, breaking the previous record by over 30 seconds set by Gillian Gorelik two years ago.

Mattice's time earned her seventh place in the competition and gives her the 55th fastest time in the nation, which gives her a good chance to be invited to the NCAA Regional Meet.

"I wanted to challenge myself and compete against the elite field of collegiate women," Sam Mattice said following the race.

"Sam put herself in the right pack that carried her into an evenly split race," Head Coach Will Guarino said. "Ultimately, this permitted her to race to her potential. She not only broke the school record, but also posted one of the top 60 times in the 10km in the NCAA this year. She also ran an average two mile split of 11:15, which is about nine seconds faster than her max as a high school senior."

On the men's side, Max Pedrotti also set a new school record in the 10k. His time of 31:43.46 earned him 24th place.

"I have had great training sessions, and felt extremely confident to race tonight at Mt. Sac," Max Pedrotti said after the race.

"Max ran an aggressive race. He went for it early and had set an incredible pace for himself," Guarino said. "He fought the third quarter of the race, but ultimately willed himself to invest in his racing self and got the record, I was thrilled for him for he was ready to get this record."

The Toreros opened up the racing segment at the Bryan Clay Invite with back-to-back records in both the 3000m steeplechase events. Junior Matthew Smith finished in 9:53.86 for 36th place and Olivia Houser placed 43rd with a time of 12:18.63. The steeplechase race is extremely tough as it requires distance, speed, strength, and mental focus.

"Both Olivia and Matt raced an outstanding steeple race. They both grew up and took their racing to a new level," Guarino said. "Ultimately they both set new records and inked their names into the USD all-time record books."

The Toreros also competed in the 5k. Notable highlights of this event would go to Allison Mattias (18:51.69) & Natalie North-Cole (19:06.41). They both ran personal bests and got third and fifth place respectively.

The Torero squad then travelled about 20 miles to race later that night at Cerritos College at the historic Mt. Sac Track and Field Invite. Five Toreros toed the line in the 10,000m and 5km came out with personal best and broke two USD school records (Mattice and Pedrotti).

"The 10km is the toughest endurance track race and many athletes can't wrap themselves around getting through so many laps on the track," Guarino said. "Sarah Kapple lost her shoe half way into the race, and even without a shoe she showed her resilience by running three miles without one."

The Toreros now set their sights on the 1,500m races that will be run Friday evening at Azusa Pacific. First race will begin at 6:55 p.m.
