Hughes & Kapple top two more school records
April 22, 2017

LA JOLLA, Calif. -- For the second week in a row, Sarah Kapple and Andrea Hughes rewrote the Torero track record book. Kapple, who set a record in the 3,000 steeplechase last week, set the new mark in the 800m with a time of 2:13.71. Hughes set a new record in the 5k a week ago and now is also the record holder in the 3k after she finished in 9:54.97 at the Triton Invite Saturday.

"Sarah ran a smart and patient race," Head Coach Will Guarino praised. "She went out in 65 at the 400m and hung on to a group that was seated in sub 2:12. The wind and the heat was a factor, but Sarah was determined to push through and close in a 68 to get fourth in her heat." Kapple breaks the school record that was held by former Assistant Coach Kirsten Allan.

"Andrea's school record attempt came hours later and she knew that she had to push the pace from the start," Guarino explained. "She paced through at 5:16 at the mile and was leading the race. With two laps to go she was pushed by Sarah Medved from Portland State whom took the lead, but with 600m to go, Andrea made a strategic move that kicked it into over gear to not look back until she crossed the line in 1st place and a new school record in the 3km."

The Torero men were highlighted by their 1-2 distance punch of Liam Burke and Max Pedrotti. "They both raced as racing partners tonight" said Coach Will Guarino. "They fed off each others energy and navigated throughout a tight field as they clicked off 71's per lap. I was impressed with Liam's determination in the last mile of the race for he was hurting but wasn't going to let a wasted personal best opportunity await him another two weeks. Max's ability to close with a 63 in the last 400m was impressive for a guy that historically doesn't have the leg speed of a miler."

The Toreros have two meets left this season while some are also setting their sites at potentially challenging West provisional marks that will qualify them into the NCAA Western Regional Championship field. The Toreros will race next weekend at the UC Irvine Steve Scott Invitational.
