LA JOLLA, Calif. - Staying on track locally at the Triton Invite, the Toreros ran a gutsy performance at the UCSD invite on Saturday. The highlight of the night was Andrea Hughes’ race as she got second and set a new school record in the 3000 meters with a time of 9:59.41. She broke her own record (10:02.48 4/25/15) that was set on the same track a year ago.

Hughes took it out from the start and led for 2900 meters. “I was determined to run under 10:00 and when I looked up at the board and saw my time, I was thrilled,” Andrea Hughes said after the race.

“We were flat in the afternoon speed races, but once the sun set athletes hunger for racing was evident,” Assistant Coach Toya Reavis said. “We were given very little time to prepare for the race. It went from being 30 minutes behind to being on time. Our women had very little time to prepare for their 3km and it seems like it was the right recipe that gave them the adrenaline to race well.”

The rest of the night the Toreros were in sync with the track and came out with many strong performances. The Torero ladies powered through the 3km with many season bests. Shannan Conlon surprised the field in the second heat of the 3km as she powered through with a victory (10:59.46).

“I wanted the win. One for our team, and also for my Father who made a surprise visit to watch our team race. I had a chance with about three laps to go so I went for it,” Conlon said.

The adrenaline rush carried over to the 5km as Max Pedrotti was clicking away 71’s per quarter during his race.  “I wanted to set a great rhythm for my race. I raced well last year, and last week and knew that I could race well tonight,” said Max Pedrotti. “I knew I was in great form when I came by my personal best two mile at 9:33. All I had to do was hold on to finish with a solid sub 15 minute performance.”

TJ Hodges ran a personal best time of 15:34. He challenged the lead pack and finished in third place in the second heat of the night. Sophomore Liam Burke also raced very well and followed just behind him with at 15:40.

“I was thrilled to be back racing,” Burke said. “I had an injury that removed me from racing temporarily, and there is nothing better then to be able to race under the lights with my teammates.”

The Torero racing schedule now turns to the North where the Toreros will be competing at the Steve Scott Invite on April, 30, 2016. The 800m will begin at 12:10 p.m.
