Torero duo continue to set the pace for the USD at UC Irvine
April 29, 2017

IRVINE, Calif. – The USD track team competed in 1500m at the adidas/Steve Scott Invitational Saturday at Anteater Stadium in Irvine, Calif. Seniors Sarah Kapple and Andrea Hughes again paced the Toreros.

“The only thing separating Sarah and Andrea was a fraction of a second,” Head Coach Will Guarino explained. “The conditions were not the best for setting records, but they made the best out of the 10 mile per hour winds, on a warm Southern California day as they both gritted out a strong performance for San Diego. They will be missed on the track, but have set strong standards for future Torero runners to follow. Both pushed the pace from the back and picked off runners to the finish as they concluded with a 5th and 6th place finish.

Freshmen Beth Wade (5:03.66) came out of the race with a victory in her heat. “It was so good to see her teammate Erin Duncan set Beth up for success,” Guarino said. “Erin pushed the pace from the start, but eventually with about 700m to go Beth smelled a potential victory. She took over the lead and worked it and with about 300m to go she continued kicking to win her section for the Toreros.”

“I feel really good about the future of the program after seeing the freshmen rise today in their racing,” Guarino praised. “The times do not translate to the effort that they put forth, but I did love seeing the youth of our team fight today. We must groom the future of our program for soon we will not be able to lean on the outstanding seniors that have carried our program this year. The attitude of putting up a good fight has been an inherent value that has been passed on by the seniors to our young runners. That is something that I will always be grateful for to our senior class.”

The Toreros next race is at Occidental College where they will close their season at Jack Kemp Stadium on Saturday May, 6, 2017.
