Toreros Push Through the Finish at Oxy
May 7, 2016

EAGLE ROCK, Calif. -- The Torero track team wrapped up their regular season at the Occidental Invite Saturday evening.

"Today athletes put it on the line. Personal bests are one thing, but watching athletes compete in their different sections was very rewarding to see," Head Coach Will Guarino said. "It was Senior day and the team really wanted to make it a special closing for both Olivia Houser and Sydney Olagaray."

"The atmosphere at Oxy was magical and one could not ask for a better stage to close out both senior Torero careers," Coach Guarino said about the seniors. "We have a lot to be thankful for and have tremendous memories of USD shared both Sydney and Olivia. They both leave the track knowing that USD was a great place for them to spend their undergraduate years. Jobs await both of them and soon they will be entering the working world. These two women have contributed a lot to our culture and their contributions will not be forgotten."

Sarah Kapple finished her race in 3rd place and her time was not far from her personal best, but she did not have the right racing ingredients to pull her through.

"I wanted to race well, and the first lap was just a bit too slow so when I reached the 800m, I decided to challenge the group to race and we took the group through negative splits," said Sarah Kapple.

Sam Mattice & Andrea Hughes ran a great race in the 5k, with Mattice finishing in second place in her heat with a time of 17:10.52. Hughes was right behind her, clocking in at 17:14.63.

"They both worked together in the latter part of the race," Guarino said. "Sam was bumped around and was startled for she nearly fell with about one mile to go. She dug deep and reeled the group that past her after leading a good segment of the race. She finished strong with a second place and a personal best."

Logan Owens ran a strategic race. He was pulled through by the pack and ran great splits leading to his trademark kick that helped him obtain a personal best and third place in his heat.

"I raced well here last year, and knew that all I had to do is trust my fitness," Owens said.

Max Pedrotti also had a phenomenal race in the third section of the 5km to finish in second place. Pedrotti challenged the leaders in the last 800m, he fell back to 3rd place with 400m to go, but came back to nip the 2nd place guy at the line.

"It has been nice to have a breakthrough season. I worked really hard this year and really wanted to improve, I took advantage of the workouts and the help that my teammates provided me with," Pedrotti said. "I was pumped to race and knew that if I challenged the pack, we could finish with a great time." Pedrotti's time of 14:38 is the 2nd fastest 5km time ever run by a USD runner and it inks his name on the all-time board.
