Fast and Furious End at Occidental Invitational
USD set 15 personal bests
May 9, 2015

EAGLE ROCK, Calif. - The University of San Diego track team closed up their season Saturday at Occidental College's Jack Kemp Stadium. There were numerous outstanding performances, and no shortage of personal records. From the beginning, to the middle, to the end, it was a solid day of racing. The meet started out with a win in the 1500m from AJ Sanchez, and closed with a second place finish in the 5000m from Liam Burke.

"We had multiple victories. The courage that people showed on the track was outstanding," Head Coach Will Guarino said.

AJ Sanchez kicked off the meet with a four second personal best time of 3:55 in the 1500m. The next race was the 800m, where Sarah Kapple got third place in her heat with a time of 2:18 (personal best). Following her was Cori Van Dyke, with a time of 2:21 (season best). Senior Rita Kuckertz crossed the finish line with a time of 2:24 (season best) and Allison Lynch kicked her way to first place in her heat with a time of 2:23 (season best).

For the men, A.J. Sanchez (unattached) and his racing partner Malik Hayes (unattached) ran the 800m. Sanchez came in at 1:54 (personal best), Hayes finished at 1:55 (season best), and Logan Owens (unattached) ran in the next heat with a time of 1:57, giving him a PR for the end of the season.

Earlier in the day, freshman Max Pedrotti, who traveled all the way to San Francisco to compete in the 10,000m ran unattached with a time of 33:40 with a second place finish. This was his very first 10,000m race on the track.

The day concluded with a 5,000m race on the track under the lights. The women's team had a strong finish with Andrea Hughes finishing in 17:05 (personal best), then Julie Giannini with 17:23 (personal best),  Kalin Padberg  with 17:47 (personal best), Ashley Mitchell with 17:57 (personal best), Sydney Olagary also with 17:57 (personal best), Dani LeMieux with 18:23, Alex Salazar with18:55 (personal best), Shannan Conlon with 19:37, and Senior Kathryn Adamson with 20:46. The men who ran unattached were Liam Burke, who placed second in his heat with a time of 15:15 (personal best), and Conor Brandt with a tenth place finish in his heat and a time of 15:50 (personal best).

This meet was memorable in more ways than one. Along with everyone's outstanding performances, we were able to cheer on our seniors Cori Van Dyke, Rita Kuckertz, and Kathryn Adamson in their last race representing USD. It was a bittersweet end to a fantastic season. Although the seniors will be greatly missed, they definitely left a profound mark on this team.

This Occidental meet now concludes the last chapter of the USD distance team's spring segment.  The Toreros will set their views on the preparation for their Cross Country season.
