Marie Zidek is entering her fourth season with the Torero women's volleyball program, and will continue to assist head coach Jenifer Petrie with all aspects of the program including recruiting, player development, community outreach, team travel, alumni outreach, marketing initiatives, and fundraising efforts.
In 2016, Zidek helped lead senior Libero Hunter Jennings to becoming USD's all-time digs leader and prolific passer. Jennings was also selected to First Team All-WCC and finished top-5 in conference for digs/set. In addition to coaching ball control, Zidek aided in the training of offensive systems set up by Coach Hilliard and Petrie. The Toreros finished at the top of the NCAA with 14.93 kills per set. All three seniors were selected First Team All-WCC and marked the first time in program history that every senior team member made the First Team. Zidek also serves as the program's technical coordinator for statistics and video.
Off the court, Zidek serves to direct player development efforts. The past four years, USD Volleyball has raised over $4,500 for the SIDEOUT Foundation's Dig Pink Initiative. Other team volunteer events include events involving the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Diego, Feeding America San Diego Foodbank, Native American Appreciation initiatives, and serving as host for many different free kid-focused clinics in the San Diego area. In addition to volunteer events, the team also participates in yearly educational sessions including team building, leadership development, goal setting, nutrition education, and the various mentorship initiatives on and off campus.
Outside of USD Volleyball, Zidek serves as the West Coast Conference Assistant Coaches Committee (ACC) representative as well as the ACC Pacific Region Chair for the AVCA. She has presented multiple times on a variety of topics at the yearly AVCA Coaches Convention. Zidek also serves as the Chair of the AVCA ACC Publications committee, which publishes articles for the Coaching Volleyball Magazine. Other coaching efforts include coaching local clinics and camps for beginner through advanced players including coaching at Wave Volleyball Club based in Del Mar.
Additionally, Zidek serves as the Sport Performance consultant for the Art of Coaching Volleyball where she serves as a resource and clincian for youth volleyball coaches. Art of Coaching is a coaching education organization commited to providing exceptional coaching content and education. It is run by lengendary coaches Terry Liskevych, Russ Rose, and John Dunning.
Named one of the AVCA's top up and coming assistant coaches, Zidek was also named to the AVCA's Thirty Under 30 Award. Zidek has served as a coach within the USA Volleyball pipeline for five years. She will coach the USA Collegiate National Team in Minneapolis this summer as one of three assistants in addition to continuing to serve as a coach at clinics and camps for USA Volleyball's High Performance program nation-wide.
Prior to joining the San Diego staff, Zidek spent one season at the State University of New York at Buffalo as an Assistant Coach. In the 2013 season, she helped lead the Bulls to one of the best seasons in program history going 18-10. Under her tutelage, she helped the team tie a program record for single-season wins (18), and helped coach senior libero Kelly Svoboda to the MAC Defensive Player of the Year award.
Prior to her time at Buffalo, Zidek spent three seasons at DePaul University, where she played an intricate role in player development, particularly with the setters and liberos, in addition with assisting in team travel logistics and camp coordination. Prior to her time with the Blue Demons, Zidek served as a graduate assistant at Oregon State.
At OSU, Zidek contributed to all aspects of the program including facilitating practice, scouting, and tracking student-athlete academic progress. In addition, she was responsible for analyzing video and statistics, and played a vital role in developing volleyball camps for the Beavers.
Zidek has been mentored by some of the best teachers in the game, including current Beaver head coach Terry Liskevych, who led the U.S. Women's National Team to a bronze medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. She completed her Master's Degree in Sports Medicine from Oregon State in June of 2010 where she specialized in sport performance training for explosive athletes.
Prior to her time at OSU, Zidek, a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, spent five months working in the High Performance Training Center of the Kuortane Sports Training Institute in Finland. In her time there, Zidek worked as a strength and conditioning coach, as well as an assistant coach for the Finnish National Volleyball Federation's U-20 men's team. In addition, she gave lectures on the basics of psychology of sport, and participated in long-term training designs for the rehabilitation of injured athletes.
On the club circuit Zidek spent nearly a decade as both a player and a coach with the Celtic Force, a club based in Palos Heights, Illinois.
Her collegiate-playing days were spent at Northern Illinois, where Zidek was a four-year letter winner. She earned several academic awards, including Mid-American Conference All-Academic team honors. Zidek graduated with distinction in 2006 with a degree in Kinesiology.
Zidek currently resides in San Diego where she lives with her wife, Stephanie Zidek.
