AMES, Iowa -Three different Toreros recorded double-digit kills to help propel the 14th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team to a thrilling 3-1 upset win over No. 11 Iowa State University Friday evening at the Iowa State Challenge.
With the 25-17, 25-17, 28-30, 25-13 win, the Toreros improve to 3-1 overall and have defeated a ranked team for a second consecutive week. With the loss, the Cyclones fall to 4-1 overall.
Sandra Lozic led the Torero offense with 17 kills on 41 swings, while also recording nine digs. Taylor Hollins recorded 15 kills, while recording seven digs and the final USD player in double digit kills was Katie Hoekman, who had 10. Jiana Bonomi had 27 assists and 14 digs to post a double-double, while C'era Oliveira recorded a team-best 17 digs. As a team, USD hit for a .308 clip.
In the first set, it was a back and forth affair in the early going, with both teams taking their turn with the lead and neither team having a lead bigger than two. Then with the score knotted at 6-all, a Sandra Lozic kill off a set from Rachel Alvey, sparked a 6-1 San Diego run to give USD the momentum and a 12-7 lead. ISU could not recover, as the Toreros cruised their way to a 26-17 win.
In the second set, it was once again a back and forth affair with both teams again taking their turn with the lead and neither team having a lead bigger than two. Then late in the frame with the score knotted up at 12-all, a Katie Hoekman kill off a set from Alvey, sparked a 7-1 USD run to give the Toreros all the momentum and a 19-13 lead. USD never looked back and they went on to take the second set by the same score as the first, 25-17.
In the third set, it was a back and forth battle all throughout the frame. Late in the set with the score knotted at 16-all, the Cyclones went on a 4-2 run to take a 20-18 lead. USD never gave up, as they answered back with a 6-2 run to take match-point at 24-22. ISU didn't just give in, as USD would have match-point three more times, before the Cyclones scored three straight points to take a 30-28 win, forcing a fourth set.
In the fourth set, it was all Toreros, as they raced out to a 7-2 lead, and never looked back. USD would eventually build up a lead to as many as 13 at 22-9 on a Chloe Ferrariservice ace, before eventually completing the upset win, 25-13 win.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday at 10 a.m. as they take on No. 18 Illinois in the final match of the Iowa State Challenge.
